Makar Farms: A Tale of Endives and Yellow Tomatoes

    January 16, 2021 /

“You take one spoon of balsamic oil, one spoon of mustard, a bit of pepper and salt, and three spoons of olive oil. It’s the perfect vinaigrette.” Mounir Makar, a former banker and economist by background, stands amidst hundreds of celery plants, mini spinach, mixed lettuce, and other leafy greens. They are bathing in water, floating in enormous basins well-calculatedly placed within a greenhouse. We, and the other visitors gathered for one of Makar Farms’ famed Saturday lunches, attentively listen as the farm’s leading man explains how this hydroponic system came into existence. The dressing recipe comes for free, Makar’s wit by nature. “The system is constructed with tools that…

    Meet: Emosha’s Organic Food

    December 12, 2020 /

Who’s Emosha’s Organic Food? Where did they get the name from? Are they organic? Those are a few questions we had when we first found out about them. For our project on Organic Food Providers we are cooperating with organic farms in and around Cairo to learn more about their supply, their owner and their way of farming. As consumers we find it important to know who’s behind the products that we buy. This creates trust, transparency and it is also the aim of our project. In the following video, the owner of Emosha’s Organic Food is answering some of our interview questions which are part of our research. *Disclaimer:…

From Cattle to Steak: Know the Source

    November 16, 2020 /

Living in Cairo for almost two years, I feel a sense of amazement to walk on grounds where the world’s most agricultural civilization ever has lived thousands of years ago. Agriculture was the foundation of the ancient Egyptian economy and was vital to the lives of the Egyptian people. To provide the civilization with food, the Egyptians were dependent on the gift of the Nile—the yearly flooding that left behind a black fertile soil, kemet, to grow crops and raise animals on. Animals, in particular cattle, were used to work the land—trample the seeds, pull the plough, and eat leftover grain—and to provide the Egyptians with food and drink. Agriculture…

The Toil and Fruits of Farming: Wiiwii’s Farm

    November 2, 2020 /

Blessed are the hands of a farmer who, through his hard labor and devotion, feeds mankind. Wael is an Egyptian farmer. With no previous experience in farming, Wael decided to leave the corporate world behind and, in February 2017, buy a plot of land that today he proudly calls Wiiwii’s Farm. Wiiwii’s Farm is an organic farm adorned with olive and lemon trees, vegetable and herb plants, chickens and goats, and the sound of birds that gives tranquility to the mind, far away from Cairo’s busy city life. Situated off Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, the owner of the farm, Wael Basheer, isolated himself from the metropolis by choice, to start his…

Bookshops Environ. Sustainability Ethical Consumption Wellbeing

On Singapore's Bussorah Street lies a flourishing On Singapore's Bussorah Street lies a flourishing Muslim bookshop called Wardah Books. Fond of wordplay Ibrahim Tahir, the owner of @wardahbooks , named the shop Wardah (rose), reminiscent of the Beloved (saws), the rose-and-nightingale symbolism in Sufi poetry, and his late mother whose favoured flower was the rose.

Click the link in our bio to read our new article, which is an interview we had with Ibrahim, about what inspired him to open an ethical bookshop, the challenges he faced, the problems with booksellers such as Amazon, his favorite book, and many more interesting topics.

"Effective self-care has to start from the inside "Effective self-care has to start from the inside out. It's about being responsible for yourself, your wellbeing, and for refueling. A lot of women think that taking care of themselves is a luxury, selfish and feel guilty when taking time out for themselves.
Taking care of yourself is an integral part to taking care of your family.
When you have the time to refuel you can give more.
Can you pour from an empty cup? Can you give if your cup is empty? What do you have to give if you are not refueling? Nothing.
Remember, don't aim to be a superwoman, aim to be a sustainable woman." @haleh_banani in the Mindful Hearts Academy.

What do you do to refuel yourself?

Much of mental health and living a life that is ta Much of mental health and living a life that is tayyibah, or a life that is aligned with our fitrah, can be found in the Islamic Tradition. The four pillars of Noble Manners, which are drawn from the forty hadith of Imam An-Nawawi, summarize what it means to have a good conduct. These simple, yet profound, pillars affect our state of being and our connectedness to our fitrah. They are:
1. Say a word that is good or be silent.
2. Leave that which does not concern you.
3. Do not become angry.
4. Love for your brother what you love for yourself.❤️

When we started our research on Organic Food Sourc When we started our research on Organic Food Sources in and around Cairo last year, we faced the question whether or not we should include hydroponics. With no organic certification body or organisation available in Egypt, we based our decision on what organic means according to the European Law 2007/834; 2008/889; 2008/1235. According to this law "Organic plant production is based on nourishing the plants primarily through the soil ecosystem. Therefore hydroponic cultivation should not be allowed.".
Based on this law, we decided not to include hydroponics within our research. When we visited @makarfarms , to our surprise we saw that they grow vegetables and herbs hydroponically and organically. We had a good conversation with the owner about these two growing techniques, and taking into consideration the water shortage that Egypt might experience in the future, like South Africa did three years ago, maybe the definition of organic should be reevaluated and include hydroponics?
What are your thoughts about this?🌿 Let us know in the comments below.

Did you know that the fashion industry is one of t Did you know that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world? According to an article on BBC.com, 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created globally and this number is expected to rise to 134 million tonnes a year by 2030.

The problem with the current fashion industry is mass producing low-quality clothing for a cheap price. This type of clothing is usually worn a couple of times before it starts getting worse after every wash. As a result, it gets lost to landfill. Another problem is that we are living in a consumerist society that is promoting fast fashion as pleasurable and addictive. We are manipulated into thinking that buying more will make us happier.
But does it really?

Instead of continuously buying more, we need to:
- buy high-quality clothing
- buy what we need
- start making our own clothing
- buy from ethical and local companies

@doodlefactoryegypt is an example of an Egyptian ethical fashion and lifestyle company that makes its products by working together with children, empowering them to make art, and to use their art for their designs. A percentage of their profit goes back to those children for their medical needs, support,...etc. As consumers we have a lot of powers in our hands and we need to use it wisely.
Swipe to have a look at a brief introduction video to Doodle Factory by @yasmeenkhamis .

(And oh, keep an eye on our page for a podcast we will soon share about The Idea of Happiness in The Qur'an with a very special guest. The problem of consumerism will also be addressed.😉)
